# Do I Need a SIM Card to Use CallTuv?

> CallTuv calls travel over the internet, so no SIM card is needed - here's what that means in practice, on phones, tablets, and computers.

**TL;DR:** No SIM card needed - CallTuv calls travel over the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data), so it works on laptops, Wi-Fi tablets, and phones without any SIM. If you do have a SIM, CallTuv doesn't touch it - your number and plan carry on as normal.

A fair question, especially since every ordinary phone call in your life has needed one. The happy answer: **no SIM card is needed** - and understanding why makes CallTuv much less mysterious.

## Why no SIM is needed

A SIM card is your ticket onto a mobile carrier's network - that's what regular calls travel over. CallTuv calls take a different road: they travel **over the internet**, through your Wi-Fi or data connection, and only join the regular phone network at the far end to ring the other person's phone. Since your side of the call never touches a carrier's calling network, there's nothing for a SIM to do. (The full picture of how this works is in [What Is CallTuv?](/help/5062184-what-is-calltuv))

That's also why there's a whole page about [calling without a SIM card](https://calltuv.com/call-without-sim) - it's one of the things CallTuv is genuinely best at.

## What this means in practice

- **Devices with no SIM work fully.** A laptop, a Wi-Fi-only tablet, or an old phone in a drawer - connect it to Wi-Fi, [sign in](/help/7391824-ways-to-sign-in-to-calltuv), and it's a working international phone. See [Use CallTuv on Any Device](/help/9145062-use-calltuv-on-any-device).
- **If you have a SIM, nothing changes for it.** CallTuv runs alongside your normal phone service without touching it - your number stays reachable, your plan stays as it is, and your carrier minutes are never used.
- **Traveling? No local SIM to buy.** Land in another country, connect to hotel or cafe Wi-Fi, and [call home](https://calltuv.com/international-calling-for-travelers) at the normal per-minute rate - no roaming, no airport SIM kiosk. ## One honest nuance about "mobile data"

Away from Wi-Fi, CallTuv can call over **mobile data** - and mobile data does come from a SIM. So on a completely SIM-less device, you'll be calling wherever there's Wi-Fi, which for most homes, offices, and hotels is everywhere that matters. Calls use only a small amount of data either way.

And if you'd like mobile data while traveling without hunting for a physical SIM, our sister product [PeleSIM](https://pelesim.com) sells travel **eSIMs** - digital SIMs you install in minutes. A PeleSIM for data plus CallTuv for calls is a tidy travel combination.

## The one optional feature that involves a real phone

Calling never needs a SIM - but if you choose to [verify your own number as caller ID](/help/8927354-verify-your-own-number-as-caller-id) (so people see *your* number when you call), you'll need to **answer one short call** on that number during setup. That's just to prove the number is yours; it's optional, done once, and the default [Shared Numbers](/help/5641209-what-recipients-see-shared-numbers-explained) setting needs nothing at all.
