# Phone Menu Not Registering Key Presses

> When an automated menu ignores the digits you press, the connection is usually distorting the tones - here's how to get through IVR menus reliably.

**TL;DR:** Press each digit firmly, one at a time, with short pauses, on a stable connection - menus fail to hear tones that arrive distorted from a shaky connection.

You call a company line, the menu says "press 1 for support" - and pressing 1 does nothing. Here's why, and how to get through.

## Why it happens

Your key presses travel as audio tones (the beeps you hear). When the connection wobbles at that moment, the tones arrive **distorted or clipped**, and the remote system doesn't recognize them. It's rarely the keypad itself - it's the connection at that instant.

## How to get through

1. Open the in-call keypad (**Show keypad** - see [In-Call Controls](/help/8064193-in-call-controls-mute-speaker-and-keypad)).
2. Press each digit **firmly, one at a time**, with a **short pause between digits** - rapid-fire sequences are what fail most.
3. If the menu still doesn't react, hang up, make sure you're on a **stable connection** (see [Calls Keep Dropping or Cutting Off](/help/4165207-calls-keep-dropping-or-cutting-off) for how), and call again.

## Before important IVR calls

If you know you're about to navigate bank or government phone menus, set yourself up first: strong Wi-Fi or full-signal data, no VPN, no downloads running. A clean connection makes tones land on the first press.

## Still stuck on a specific menu?

Some systems are simply picky. If one particular number never accepts your input, [contact us](https://calltuv.com/contact) with the number - we'll check the route's tone handling.
