Every MacBook Apple has ever sold connects to the internet one way: Wi-Fi. No SIM tray, no eSIM, no cellular data. Meanwhile the iPad has had built-in cellular since 2010, and Microsoft has been shipping a 5G Surface laptop since 2025.

That looks like it is finally about to change. Apple's move to in-house modems has removed the main engineering obstacle, and references to a cellular MacBook Pro have shown up in Apple's own code. This is a full tracker of what has actually been reported, what is still guesswork, and what a MacBook with eSIM would really change day to day.

It also answers the practical question that gets buried under the rumor cycle: if the point of an always-connected Mac is to work without your phone, what happens when you need to make an actual phone call from it? That part you can already solve today.

The short answer

No MacBook currently supports eSIM or cellular data. As of July 2026 that includes the M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models released in March 2026, the MacBook Air, and the $599 MacBook Neo. Every one of them is Wi-Fi only.

The first cellular MacBook is expected to be the redesigned OLED MacBook Pro, currently reported for late 2026 at the earliest and more likely early 2027. It is expected to use one of Apple's own C-series modems and to be eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray. Apple has never confirmed any of this.

How much of this should you actually believe?

Rumor posts tend to flatten everything into one confident narrative. The honest version has tiers.

Near certain. Apple has working in-house modems shipping in volume, and it has tested a MacBook Pro with one. The macOS code reference is not a wish list item, it is a hardware configuration that existed somewhere inside Apple. Apple also has two decades of documented interest in the idea.

Likely. If cellular ships in a Mac, it will be eSIM-only and it will debut at the top of the line rather than in the MacBook Air. Both follow directly from Apple's existing behavior with the iPhone and iPad.

Genuinely uncertain. The launch date, and whether the first redesigned OLED MacBook Pro includes cellular at all. Note the tension in the tracker above: an April 2026 feature roundup lists cellular as expected, while the July 2026 roadmap of the same machine does not mention it. That is not a contradiction anyone has resolved. Apple testing a modem in a prototype has never guaranteed the feature ships.

Speculation. Pricing, the product name, carrier plan structure, and whether Apple pairs it with any kind of built-in data offering.

The mmWave problem nobody talks about

Here is the detail that makes the timeline messier than most coverage admits. Apple's C1 and C1X do not support mmWave. The C2 reportedly still does not, which is why reporting suggests US iPhone 18 Pro models may keep a Qualcomm modem while the rest of the world gets the C2.

For a phone, that split is expensive but manageable. For a Mac, it changes the calculation. Apple would either ship a Mac whose US cellular performance is capped below its own flagship phone, or take on a second modem supplier for a product line with far lower volume than the iPhone. Neither is attractive. This is a plausible reason a cellular Mac keeps slipping even as the technology becomes ready, and it is worth watching more closely than any single leak about a launch month.

Why it will be eSIM-only

Assume no SIM tray. Four reasons point the same direction.

  • Thickness. A nano-SIM tray needs real vertical clearance in a chassis whose entire redesign premise is being thinner.
  • Structural integrity and sealing. Every tray is a hole in the enclosure and a point of ingress. Apple has been closing holes in its laptops for a decade.
  • Precedent. Apple went eSIM-only on US iPhones starting with the iPhone 14 in 2022 and has expanded that since. New cellular iPads are already eSIM-only.
  • The use case fits. The person buying a cellular Mac is disproportionately a traveler who wants to switch carriers by region, which is exactly what eSIM does better than a physical card.

What has to change in macOS

This is an underrated signal. macOS has no Cellular settings pane, because no Mac has ever needed one. iOS and iPadOS have an entire subsystem for it: carrier plan installation via QR code or carrier app, data roaming toggles, per-app cellular permissions, low data mode, and cellular usage accounting.

All of that has to arrive in macOS before or alongside the hardware. macOS 27 Golden Gate, announced at WWDC in June 2026 and shipping in September, is the first release to drop Intel support entirely, which makes it a clean base for a modem stack. If a cellular pane starts appearing in macOS betas, that is a far better launch signal than any supply chain note. It has not appeared yet.

What it will likely cost

Apple has charged a $150 to $200 premium for cellular on iPads for years, and the same range is the reasonable expectation for a Mac. But hardware is the smaller number. The recurring cost is data: a dedicated line, a shared plan slot, or a travel eSIM plan bought per trip. Budget for the plan, not the option.

Which raises the question that actually matters for most people: what are you going to do with that connection?

The gap a cellular MacBook does not close: actual phone calls

An always-connected Mac gets you email, cloud sync, video meetings and messaging without your phone. It does not, by itself, let you call a phone number. macOS can relay calls through a nearby iPhone, but that reintroduces exactly the dependency the eSIM was supposed to remove, and it does nothing when your phone is dead, out of range, or on a SIM that charges international roaming rates.

This is the real scenario. You are in another country. Your laptop is online through its own data connection. You need to call a hotel's landline, a bank's support line, a clinic, a supplier, a landlord. None of them are on WhatsApp. All of them are ordinary phone numbers.

How much cellular data does a call actually use?

In practice a voice call over Opus runs on the order of 20 to 30 MB per hour of talk time in both directions combined. Even on the uncompressed fallback codec it stays well under 100 MB an hour.

Put that against a typical travel data plan and the arithmetic is not close. A 1 GB eSIM plan covers something like 30 to 50 hours of calling. Voice is one of the cheapest things you can do with a data connection, and it is the thing a laptop has historically been worst at.

Should you wait for it?

Be honest about how often you are actually stuck without connectivity. If you work primarily from a home office or a studio, the current M5 MacBook Pro is a strong machine and cellular would be a feature you use a handful of times a year.

If you are a frequent traveler, a field engineer, or someone whose income depends on being reachable from anywhere, the redesign is worth watching. But do not plan a purchase around a launch window that has already moved from 2028 to 2026 to early 2027, in a year where memory shortages are actively reshaping Apple's roadmap. Buy the machine you need when you need it, and solve connectivity and calling separately in the meantime. Both are solvable today.
