How to write a number that works from anywhere
Start with + and the country code
The + stands for "the international code of whatever phone you are on", so the number works from any country. It is +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK.

Drop the 0 used inside the country
Many countries start local numbers with a 0 that is only for calls inside the country. Leave it out after the country code. Italy is the exception: its landline numbers keep the 0.

Spaces and brackets do not matter
They are only there to make the number easier to read. Phones and the CallTuv dialer ignore them.

What the number type tells you
- Landline
- A fixed line at a home, office or institution.
- Mobile
- A cell phone. In many countries calls to mobiles cost a little more than calls to landlines.
- Landline or mobile
- In the US, Canada and the rest of the +1 plan, both kinds of number look the same, so the digits cannot tell which it is.
- Toll-free
- Free for callers inside the country. With CallTuv, calling a US or Canadian one from abroad costs a normal per-minute rate.
Validator questions
What does "valid" mean here?
That the number fits the numbering rules of its country: the right country code, a range that is in use, and the right number of digits. It does not show whether the line is switched on or who it belongs to.
Can it tell a mobile from a landline?
In most countries, yes, because mobiles have their own number ranges. In the US, Canada and the rest of the +1 plan they share the same ranges, so it says "landline or mobile".
Do I need to type the + and the country code?
It is best to. Without them, the number is read as a number of the country you picked. With them, the number names its own country.
What is the format "for your contacts"?
It is the number with + and the country code and no spaces, known as E.164. Saved like that, a contact can be called from any country without changing anything.
Can I call a toll-free number from abroad?
CallTuv calls US and Canadian toll-free numbers such as 1-800 from any country, at a normal per-minute rate shown before you call.
