Your phone plan doesn’t sail with you
“International roaming included” is about countries, not the ocean. Four things the cruise brochure leaves out.
Your plan’s roaming stops at the gangway
Out at sea, a phone that’s switched on can join the ship’s own cell network. Carriers bill that as cruise roaming, a separate price list from the trips abroad your plan covers.
Cruise passes are per phone, per day
AT&T’s Day Pass and Verizon’s Cruise Daily Pass are $20 a day for each line. Verizon starts a day as soon as the phone does anything at sea, background app data included.
Wi-Fi Calling isn’t the way around it
Carnival says none of its WiFi plans support the Wi-Fi Calling your carrier runs.
Ship WiFi doesn’t switch roaming off
A couple on a Carnival cruise used the ship’s WiFi, never turned on Airplane mode, and came home to a $2,349 roaming charge. It was dropped only after a consumer advocate stepped in.
A 10-minute call home
- AT&T, no pass$4 a minute at sea
- $40.00
- Verizon, no pass$1.99 a minute at sea
- $19.90
- AT&T or Verizon cruise passPer phone, for that day
- $20.00
Carrier prices are for calls over the ship’s cell network, from AT&T’s and Verizon’s own pages, read 7 October 2026. CallTuv’s is today’s live rate.
Sources and screenshotsThe calls a cruise still needs
Family is on WhatsApp. The tour desk, the restaurant, the hotel and your bank’s card line are not. CallTuv rings their ordinary landlines and mobiles.
The tour that hasn’t shown up
Ring the tour operator from the pier when the pickup is late, on the terminal’s WiFi.
A table before the ship sails
Book lunch ashore or check a restaurant is open with a quick call to its landline.
The night after you dock
Call the hotel to confirm a late check-in or leave your bags early.
A card declined ashore
Reach your bank’s card line from any port, US 1-800 numbers included.
Calling 1-800 numbersThe flight home
Call the airline about a change, and stay on hold as long as it takes.
How to use your phone on a cruise
Ten minutes before you sail, and one setting before the ship leaves port.
Add credit before you sail
Sign up with your email or Google and top up from $5. No cruise pass to buy, and credit never expires.
Save the numbers for each port
Your hotel, the tour operators, your bank’s card line and the airline, saved as contacts so they’re one tap away ashore.
Saving contactsAirplane mode before the ship leaves port
Switch it on, then turn WiFi back on. The phone stays off the ship’s cell network, and CallTuv still works over WiFi.
Calling in Airplane modeMake your calls in port
Join the terminal’s or a café’s WiFi, or use a local SIM or travel eSIM, and call at the price the dialer shows.
Made for calling from port
Any WiFi works
Port cafés, cruise terminals, and the ship’s WiFi when your plan lets calls through. A local SIM or eSIM works too.
Calling without a SIMSame price in every port
Where you are doesn’t change what a call costs. Calling home from Cozumel costs the same as calling from home.
No cruise pass
Pay only for the minutes you use. Nothing to buy per phone, per day, and no plan to change before you sail.
Phone menus work
Once the call connects, use the keypad to pick options and type booking or card numbers.
Your number on the call
Verify a number you own so people see a number they know, or rent a US number for $5.95 a month.

I had some problems at first, but that turned out to be an issue with the WiFi on the ship I was on. Before I even had to take any action, Yosi Dahan, the Co-founder & CEO of CallTuv emailed me to see how things were going and when I described my issues, he quickly explained how to fix them and added some money back to my account. Once I was on land and normal, secure WiFi, every call I made worked flawlessly. This is a remarkable service and app. Highly recommend!!

A lifesaver when my phone was stolen abroad I was assaulted while on holiday in Lisbon and had my phone stolen, leaving me with no way to contact anyone. Using CallTuv from a browser, I was able to call the UK consulate for help and ring Apple to sort out my AppleCare+ claim. The call quality was great throughout and I didn't run into a single issue. Being able to make proper phone calls without a SIM or my own device turned a really stressful situation into something manageable. The founder also personally checks in with users, which says a lot about how much they care. Highly recommended, especially as a backup for travelling.

I’m travelling in Bali and was unfortunately hospitalised with an illness. I needed to speak urgently with travel insurance and family back in the UK and found it freakishly difficult to find a solution - my phone network were no help, I tried several e-sim apps and nothing seemed to be working. I stumbled across CallTUV and the app has been a complete godsend, it costs me just $0.04 a minute to call the UK from Indonesia and everything works perfectly. Made a tricky few days much easier to navigate, so thank you. Will be recommending the app to everyone.

I travel often and was unhappy when Skype was discontinued. I have tried different products to make calls from Europe and I decided to try CallTuv. I have to say that I am very happy with my experience. I found it to be simple to use, straight forward and the most similar to Skype. My calls were clear and connecting was easy.

Phones on a cruise: questions
Will my cell phone work on a cruise ship?
Yes, but out at sea it usually connects to the ship’s own cell network, which your carrier bills as cruise roaming. AT&T charges $4 a minute without a pass and Verizon $1.99, and both sell a $20-a-day cruise pass per phone.
What carriers charge at seaHow do I avoid roaming charges on a cruise?
Put the phone in Airplane mode before the ship leaves port, then turn WiFi back on. The phone can’t join a cell network, but WiFi still works, so you can call with CallTuv over WiFi at the price the dialer shows.
Does CallTuv work in Airplane mode?
Yes, as long as WiFi is on. On iPhone and Android you can switch WiFi back on while Airplane mode stays on, and CallTuv calls go over the internet, so they never need the mobile signal.
Calling without a SIM or signalCan I use CallTuv on the ship’s WiFi?
When your WiFi plan lets calls through. Carnival’s Premium plan opens everything, while its cheaper Social plan opens a set list of social apps. Ship WiFi is shared by everyone on board, so calls are usually clearer in port or on land.
Can you use Wi-Fi Calling on a cruise ship?
Carnival says none of its WiFi plans support the Wi-Fi Calling your carrier runs. CallTuv is a different thing: it needs no SIM and no phone plan, so it works wherever your WiFi lets calls through.
How much does a call from a cruise cost with CallTuv?
The same as from home. You pay the per-minute rate for the number you call, shown in the dialer before you call, and the port you’re in doesn’t change it. Rates start at $0.03/min.
Rates by countryCan I call a 1-800 number from a cruise port?
Yes. US and Canadian toll-free numbers and UK freephone numbers connect from any country. They are not free through CallTuv: you pay the per-minute rate the dialer shows before you call.
Calling 1-800 numbersDo I need a cruise pass or an international plan?
Not for CallTuv calls. They go over WiFi or data, so your carrier’s calling plan isn’t used. If you use mobile data in port, your carrier’s data charges apply, so WiFi, a local SIM or a travel eSIM keeps that low.
Can people call me back on CallTuv?
CallTuv makes outgoing calls only, so it can’t receive calls or texts, including verification codes from your bank.
Receiving calls and textsWhat should I do in an emergency on a cruise?
On board, tell the crew. Ashore, dial the local emergency number from your phone’s own dialer: CallTuv can’t call 911, 112 or any other emergency number.
Emergency callsWhat number will people see when I call?
By default, one of CallTuv’s shared numbers. You can verify a number you own and show that instead, or rent a US number for $5.95 a month.
Caller ID optionsIs there a subscription?
No. You top up from $5 and pay per minute, and your credit never expires, so what’s left lasts to your next trip. A rented US number is optional, at $5.95 a month.
