View as MarkdownIf you call the same people often, it helps when they recognise the number that comes up. You can rent a US phone number from CallTuv for $5.95 a month, and that number is what everyone sees when you call.
It is worth being clear about one thing straight away: a rented number is for outgoing calls only. Nobody can ring it back and no text message can reach it. If what you need is a number people can call you on, see Can I Receive Calls or Text Messages (SMS)?.
What you need before you start
Two things, both quick to check:
- Some calling credit on your account. A number is only useful if you can actually make calls, so we ask for a balance before renting one.
- A payment card saved on your account. The monthly fee is charged to it. If you have not saved one yet, go to Balance in the menu and add one.
If either is missing, the renting screen shows the one thing to do next, with a button for it: Add credit or Add a card. Adding credit also saves the card you pay with, so most people only ever need the first. Add a card opens a secure Stripe page that saves your card without charging it, then brings you straight back to pick your number. A card you paid with through Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link works for the monthly fee too. The one exception is a card issued in India: Indian banks ask you to approve every card payment yourself, so a monthly fee can't go through on it, and the screen asks for a card issued outside India. If you are a member of a team rather than its owner, the screen says your team owner needs to do it, because the credit and the card belong to the team.
Once you have the number, a low balance does not put it at risk. The monthly fee comes from your card, never from your calling credit.
How to rent a number
- Open the Call page and click the caller ID button at the top of the dialer (it says Caller ID: and the number your calls show now). A short list opens.
- Click Rent a US number. A screen just for renting opens, and its title reminds you the number is for outgoing calls.
- You will see five numbers. Under each one is the state it belongs to, for example Ohio, and on the right is its monthly price.
- If none of them appeals, click the back arrow at the top left and click Rent a US number again. You will get five different numbers, and you can do this as often as you like.
- Click the number you want. A dot appears next to it, and the button at the bottom of the screen changes to name that exact number, for example Rent +1 (859) 478-5574, with the monthly price written on the button under the number. Under the button, the screen names the card that pays, for example "Your Visa •••• 4242 is charged $5.95 today, then once a month until you cancel." Right after it, a rental terms link opens the rented phone numbers section of our Terms of Service in a new tab.
- Check it is the number you meant, then click that button. Your card is charged and the number is yours within a few seconds. A confirmation screen shows the number, the amount charged and the date it renews, with a Back to dialer button.
From then on it is selected automatically as your caller ID, so your very next call already shows it.
Why only the state is shown
Each number shows its state, not a town. The first three digits after the +1, the area code, are what the people you call recognise, together with the state: a number with a Kentucky area code reads as a Kentucky number to whoever you are calling.
What it costs
The price is $5.95 a month. If the billing address of the card you pay with is in Israel, 18% VAT is added on top, which makes the total $7.02 a month. Whichever applies to you, the full amount is written on the button you press to pay, before you pay anything.
The fee is charged to your card once a month on the same date you rented the number. It is completely separate from your calling credit. Calls still cost calling credit at the normal per-minute rates, and the dialer shows the exact price before you call. You can check any destination's rate on the rates page.
Cancelling your number
You can stop at any time, and nothing happens suddenly:
- Open the Call page and click the caller ID button at the top of the dialer.
- Click the small settings cog on the right of your US number to open its screen.
- Under Subscription you can see the monthly price, the renewal date and the card that pays. Click Cancel subscription below it.
- A confirmation lists exactly what happens: the date the number stops working, that you won't be charged again, and that it cannot be recovered after that date. Click Cancel subscription again to confirm, or Keep my number to leave everything as it is.
Your number keeps working until the end of the month you have already paid for, and we tell you the exact date, on screen and by email. If you change your mind before that date, a Keep my number button puts everything back exactly as it was.
After that date the number is released and we cannot get it back for you, even the next day. If you are unsure, it costs nothing to wait until closer to the date before deciding.
Cancelling part way through a month does not give a partial refund, because the month has already been paid for in full.
If your team has no card before a renewal
If your team has no card that can pay the monthly fee, for example because the card was removed, we email the team owner 3 days before a number renews. The email lists every number your team pays for, who uses each one and the date each one renews, so nothing is lost by surprise. Its Add a card button opens a secure Stripe page where you save a card. Nothing is charged when you save it, and your numbers renew with it from then on. A team member who rents one of the numbers gets a short note about their own number too, since only the team owner can add the card.
If a monthly payment does not go through
Sometimes a card expires or a bank declines a payment. If that happens, your number keeps working while we try again, and your number shows Payment failed in red in the caller ID list, and a small red dot appears on the caller ID button so you notice it. Open the number's screen to see what went wrong and what to do.
- If it was a temporary problem, we retry automatically and the message tells you when.
- If your bank declined the card outright, retrying will not help, and the message asks you to add a different card. There is a Pay now button that settles it immediately once your new card is saved.
- If there is no card on file at all, for example because you removed it, retrying cannot work either. The message says so and gives you an Add a card button, which opens the same secure Stripe page as when you rented the number. Once the card is saved, press Pay now to settle it straight away.
- If the only card left is one issued in India, it cannot be charged monthly either. The message says so and asks you to add a card issued outside India, with the same Add a card button.
You also hear about it by email. Stripe, our payment provider, sends whoever pays for your team a secure link to update the card and pay. It works on a phone and does not need you to log in, so it helps if you mostly use the CallTuv app. A few days before the number would be released, we send a last reminder with the exact date.
If the payment is never completed, the number is released about two weeks after the first failed payment, so it is worth sorting out as soon as you see the message.
Things a rented number does not do
- It cannot receive calls. Anyone ringing it usually hears a not-in-service message, depending on their own phone company, and the call is never answered.
- It cannot receive texts, including bank codes and other one-time security codes.
- It cannot be used for emergency calls. See Emergency Calls Are Not Supported.
- It is only available with a US area code at the moment.
Other ways to choose what people see
Renting a number is one of three options, and the other two are free:
- Verify a phone you already own as your caller ID. People see your real number and can ring you back on your normal phone. See Verify Your Own Number as Caller ID.
- Use a CallTuv Shared Number, the zero-setup default. See What Recipients See: Shared Numbers Explained.
If none of this answers your question, get in touch and we will help.
Frequently asked questions
- Does my rented number work in the CallTuv app?
- Yes. Your calls from the app go out on your rented number too, with nothing to set up. The app's caller ID screen does not list rented numbers, so it still says CallTuv Shared Numbers, but the people you call see your rented number. To go back to shared numbers, switch on the website and the app follows from the very next call.
- How much does a CallTuv number cost?
- $5.95 a month. If your card's billing address is in Israel, 18% VAT is added on top, so the total is $7.02 a month. The price is shown in full before you pay, and it is charged to the card you already have saved.
- Can people call or text my CallTuv number back?
- No. A rented number is for outgoing calls only. Anyone who rings it usually hears a not-in-service message (the exact message depends on their own phone company), the call is never answered, and text messages cannot reach it at all. If you need people to be able to call you back, verify a phone you already own as your caller ID instead, because calls to that number ring your normal phone.
- Can I choose which number I get?
- You choose from five we show you. Go back and open the screen again and you will see five different ones, as many times as you like, until you find one you are happy with. There is no search box for a particular city or area code, because most popular area codes have no numbers left to give out.
- How do I cancel my number's subscription?
- On the website, open the Call page and click the caller ID button at the top of the dialer. Click the small settings cog next to your US number, then click Cancel subscription and confirm. Your number keeps working until the end of the month you have already paid for, you won't be charged again, and until that date you can undo it with Keep my number. Cancelling the number does not touch your calling credit or your account.
- What happens if I cancel?
- You keep the number until the end of the month you have already paid for, and it stops working after that. Until that date you can change your mind with the Keep my number button. Once the date passes the number is gone and we cannot get it back for you.
- How do I change the card my number is charged to?
- Make the new card your team's default. On the Balance page, find the card in your list of saved cards and choose Make default, or add a new one with Add a card on your number's screen. Your number's monthly payment moves to that card straight away, and if a payment had just failed, the next try uses it. A card you saved with Apple Pay or Google Pay works too, but if your team has both, the number uses the card that was typed in. Cards issued in India can't be charged monthly.
- Will I get emails about my number?
- Yes. We email you when the number is ready, when you cancel it (with the date it stops working), and when it ends. If your team has no card that can pay for its numbers, the team owner gets one email 3 days before a number renews, listing every number and when each one renews, with a button to add a card. If a monthly payment fails, Stripe, our payment provider, emails whoever pays for your team a secure link to update the card and pay, which works on a phone without logging in, and a few days before the number would be released we send a last reminder with the date. If you are a team member, the team owner gets these emails too, because your number is charged to the team's card.
- Why do I need calling credit to rent a number?
- A number is only useful if you can make calls with it, so we ask for a small balance on your account first. Once you have the number, your balance running low does not affect it. The number is charged to your card, not to your calling credit.
- Can I have more than one number?
- One number per person. If you are on a team, each member can rent their own, and a number belongs only to the person who rented it rather than being shared with the rest of the team. A team can rent up to five new numbers in any 30 days. If your team needs more, contact us and we can raise it.
- I'm on two teams. Which one does my number work on?
- Only on the team whose card pays for it, the one you rented it on. On your other team it still appears in the caller ID menu, marked with the team it works on. Opening it tells you so and offers a button to switch to that team. Calls from the other team show a shared CallTuv number.
- What happens to my number if I'm removed from the team?
- If the team that pays for it removes you, the number stops working right away and can't be recovered, and you get an email. The team owner can also end your number from the team page, either at the end of the paid month or right away. If they set it to end, only they can undo it, so ask them if you still need it.
- Which caller ID should I pick in the app or the Chrome extension to use my rented number?
- Keep it on Shared Numbers. The app and the extension do not list rented numbers yet, so that option is the one that sends your calls out on your rented number. If you pick your own verified number there instead, your calls show that number and stop using the rented one, on the website too. To go back, pick Shared Numbers in the app or the extension, or your rented number on the website.
- How long do I have to fix a failed payment before I lose my number?
- About two weeks. Your number keeps working while we try the payment again, and a few days before it would be released we email you a last reminder with the exact date. Updating your card and pressing Pay now on the number's screen settles it straight away. If the payment is never completed, the number is released and cannot be recovered.
- What happens to my number if my account is paused?
- It is put on hold. While the account is paused your calls cannot go out, and the monthly fee is not charged, so nothing builds up for later. If the review clears your account within 7 days, the number comes back as it was and billing resumes. If the pause has not been lifted by then, the number is released and cannot be recovered. The email we send when the account is paused gives the exact date.
- Can I rent a number in the CallTuv app?
- Not in the app. Renting is done on the website. Open the Call page at calltuv.com and click the caller ID button at the top of the dialer. Once it is rented, your calls from the app use it too.
- Can I move my existing number to CallTuv, or take my CallTuv number to another provider?
- Unfortunately not. Numbers can't be moved in or out. You choose one of the five US numbers we show you. If you would rather show a number you already have, you can verify it as your caller ID for free.
- Can I use my rented number to sign up for WhatsApp, Telegram or my bank?
- Unfortunately not. Those services check a number by sending it a text or calling it, and a rented CallTuv number can't receive either, so the code would never arrive.
- What happens to my number if I delete my CallTuv account?
- It ends straight away, together with the account. There is no refund for the rest of the month, and the number can't be recovered. If you only want to stop paying for the number, cancel it instead and keep your account.
- Where do I find receipts and invoices for my number?
- Stripe, our payment provider, emails a receipt for each monthly payment to whoever pays for your team. The invoice for each payment is on the Team page under the Invoices tab, marked Phone number, with the number and the team member who rents it. Only the team owner can see that tab.
- Can I rent a different number after cancelling?
- Yes. Each person can rent one new number every 30 days, counting from when they rented the last one, even if that one has already ended. Because a cancelled number keeps working until the end of the month you paid for, you can usually rent the new one on the day the old one ends, and the screen tells you the exact date if you need to wait. One card can also pay for numbers on at most two teams in any 30 days. These limits stop people from swapping through numbers, which gets numbers marked as spam.
