Seeing a small charge - a few cents - for a call you're sure never went through? That's understandably confusing, so let's walk through exactly what happened. The short version is reassuring: CallTuv never charges for a call that wasn't answered. If you were charged, the destination phone network reported that the call was answered - just not necessarily by the person you were trying to reach.

Calls that ring with no answer, come back busy, or fail to start are always free. A charge only ever appears when the destination network reports the call as answered.

What counts as an "answered" call

The moment the destination network connects the call, billing starts - and "connected" doesn't always mean a person said hello. The most common cases:

  • Voicemail picked up. If the call goes to voicemail - even for just a second or two before you hang up - the network treats that as an answered call, exactly like it would on a regular phone plan.
  • A recorded carrier message answered. Messages like "the number you have dialed is unavailable" are played by the destination network after answering the call, so they can count as answered time too.
  • The call connected, but you couldn't hear it. If your internet connection is unstable, the call can genuinely connect on the other end while you hear silence or no ringing on yours. The other side may even have said "hello?" without you hearing it.

Why the charge is small but not zero

CallTuv bills per minute, and answered time always rounds up to a whole minute - so even a few seconds of answered call is billed as one minute at the destination's rate. That's why these charges are small, fixed-looking amounts: a $0.06 charge simply means one minute at a $0.06-per-minute destination. See Understanding Rates and Per-Minute Billing for how rates work.

What to check on your end

  1. Open your call history and find the call - it shows the exact duration and cost, so you can confirm how much answered time the network reported.
  2. Make sure your internet connection is stable, and turn off any VPN before calling. A weak connection is the usual reason a connected call sounds like silence - see Calls Keep Dropping or Cutting Off.
  3. Check your speaker and microphone are working and allowed - Fixing Microphone and Audio Issues walks through it step by step.
  4. If you suspect voicemail is answering instantly, the destination phone may be off or out of coverage - try again later, or ask the person to check their phone.

Still looks wrong?

If the call history shows answered time you're confident never happened, contact us with the exact number you dialed and roughly when you called - with those details we can trace that specific call and see exactly what the network reported. Genuine mistakes, including calls that never actually connected, are always reviewed - see Refunds.

Frequently asked questions

Why was I charged when nobody picked up?
Because the destination network reported the call as answered. Very often that means voicemail or a recorded carrier message answered the call - even a couple of seconds of voicemail counts as an answered call.
Do I pay for busy or unanswered calls?
No. Calls that ring with no answer, come back busy, or fail to go out at all are never charged.
What is the smallest possible charge for a call?
One minute at the destination's per-minute rate. Answered time always rounds up to a whole minute, so an answered call of a few seconds costs the same as a full minute.
